Since its beginning in 1983, HearthSong has been committed to helping parents follow their instincts to provide their children with age-appropriate, wholesome, quality playthings. That’s because at HearthSong, we believe childhood is a vital chapter in life-a special time when children can be occupied with the joy of being children. And, equally importantly, a time when children need to experience as much creative, imaginative play as possible because kids experience so many of life’s first lessons through play.

The first HearthSong catalog was printed in black and white, with pencil drawings of carefully selected toys and books and mailed from the home of founder Barbara Kane by her family. The name HearthSong was chosen to reflect core family values – the Hearth, a traditional symbol for the center of the home, and Song, a symbol of family spirit and of a special playfulness that parents and children enjoy together.

Over the next 25 years, HearthSong evolved into a nationally known and respected source for quality children’s toys, games and crafts. Parents who found unique toys for their children decades ago tell us they’re now thrilled to be finding the same kinds of educational, entertaining toys to give to their children’s children.

Our selection of products has grown and expanded too. But we can still guarantee that each item is carefully selected for its quality, safety, and relevance to your child’s development – and we are steadfast in our commitment to provide you with Toys You’ll Feel Good About GivingĀ®.

these stories are short. some rhyme and some don't. they would be good for picture books but they are not illustrated yet. i need to know if publishers prefer to use their own illustrators or if they prefer you to send illustrations with a manuscript. several friends are pushing me to look into publishing some of my children's stories, but i have no idea where to begin.

I would buy the two bibles of the year if I didn't want o go to contests: "The Writer's Market" and "Book of Editors, Publishers and Agents."

Study what you need from them; copyright, how to deliver said manuscripts, then to whom. The best, after publishing a little something, is to get an agent to do all that for you. Costs, but it's worth it.
For contests, many magazines advertise them but I like Poets and Writers the best, for many reasons… articles and writers' retreats, workshops, etc as well as many contests.
good luck!

I am a 56 yr old recently retired elem teacher and hold a wealth of info in my head and have the ability to write, but I just don't even know how to start. I am not an illustrator at all but am extremely good at getting religious ideas down to their level and could use photos but how do you do this when picture books are mostly pics ? I have the words and ideas. I know how hard it is to sell the books, I can self publish

It's not a picture book you want. It's simply a story book you want to write. You can always advertise for an illustrator, but it's getting the story out that you need to worry about. Just write a story. It will need to teach a lesson, or be used to teach how to read. You have to have fun with words and the sounds of words. Using made up words is even acceptable in Childrens books. I strongly recommend the book "Through the Eyes of a Child". It's the book I use to teach my childrens literature course to college students wanting to become teachers. It's an excellent resource tool for anyone interested in childrens literature. It's updated regularly and really has it's 'hand' on the pulse of childrens literature.

Once you get the story written, then you'll be ready to tackle the idea of publication. I have a colleague in Australia that self-publishes her own childrens books. Then she arranges story times with various elementary schools and libraries. She's successful at this. You might be as well.

Good luck to you! :o )
