I’m teaching Mathematics to 4th graders for the first time. Please bear with me…

The school I teach at is a posh school mainly for rich and literally spoiled kids. Although the school is considered ‘wealthy’, it has extremely limited resources for both teaching and organizational purposes (e.g. lack of functional computers, printers, teaching resources etc.)

Note: I live in third world-country.

The kids in my fourth grade are having MAJOR behavioral problems and there is almost NO input, guidance or direction from the parents or the “counselors” at school. In addition, the school refuses to take any disciplinary measures (detention, lines etc.) when students misbehave in class, or fail to complete their classwork and homework.

I dread going to each Mathematics class. The students mostly ignore me when I enter the class, and at times, flat out refuse to listen to my instructions. They hardly pay attention when I’m trying to explain a mathematical concept.

Everyday problems include:

- They talk (not even whisper) in their native languages
- Throw paper balls at each other
- They feel free shout out loud to other students whenever they feel like it
- Play with toys or stickers
- Get up from their seats whenever they want to (for reasons such as talking to a friend on the other side)
- Constantly, and I mean CONSTANTLY, interrupt me when I’m explaining the heart of a mathematical concept
- Generally disrupt the class
- Continually fail to bring their books, notebooks and papers to class
- Hardly hand in homework assignments
- Many parents ignore the comments I send home concerning their child

When I tell the students to stop talking, or to stop misbehaving in class, they simply laugh at me, or ignore me. During class, I feel as if my mind will explode.

On the first day, I gave them each a copy of class rules, then read out loud and explained each rule to the students. Even now, I keep going over the rules, but no avail. I’ve tried being encouraging students (praising them verbally or with gifts, candies) and also tried being firm and strict, but now I feel like I’m invisible in class. And I do my best to be consistent as a teacher.

I feel that the problem is that the students are completely unwilling to learn, and ultimate THEY DON’T LEARN ANYTHING.

As a result of all the problems, I’m lagging behind with the math syllabus, and am currently getting pressurized from the school admin to keep up. I’ve tried explaining the problems to the admin, but they always start with the ‘A good teacher is supposed to…’ lecture. They won’t allow me to take any disciplinary measures against the children (e.g. keeping them for an hour behind school, so they finish their missed assignments in my presence.) Most of the parents are simply not interested in their childrens’ upbringing (both behavioral and educational), and are not supportive of the teachers.

Now it’s come to the point where I’m crying at home almost everyday. I’m doing my best at school… but I feel that my efforts have absolutely no outcome or rewards.

Any advice?
Additional Notes:

I also try my best to make the lessons interesting, e.g. connecting current and real-life scenarios with math (today I explained how votes help in electing a president). Sometimes I use the overhead projector to visually portray concepts for better understanding.

Doesn’t help though….

i really feel for you, i had the same problem last summer. i was teaching some of the richest, most stuck up kids in Italy.

first of all, we need to acknowledge that whatever you’ve done so far hasn’t worked, so we need to scrap that and do something totally different.

teaching arrogant rich kids can be extremely challenging. but once you manage to somehow earn their respect, it can turn into a very rewarding experience, and their parents will also be grateful that someone actually managed to educate their little brats.

here are some strategies that worked for me.

*walk into class and have a good talk. tell them you understand that maths can be boring sometimes. say you’re going to make it more fun from now on. BUT tell them they have to cooperate or else it’s not going to work.

* i used to promise them a little game at the end of the lesson if they can behave. this game usually has nothing to do with the lesson. "fruit salad" was one of their favourites. so it’s a treat for them. only reward them if they’ve been good throughout the lesson.

*IMPORTANT: rather than discouraging misbehaviour, encourage positive behaviour. praise them when they do something good, even if it’s something trivial, like not forgetting to bring their book to school.

* split the class into two teams. draw 2 sets of 10 boxes at the top of the blackboard – one for each team. whenever a team really misbehaves, shade a box. tell them that the team with the least boxes will get a treat at the end of the week. then give them bag of sweets or something, or a small gift. this really works because kids love competition.

*tell them that if they promise to be quiet, you will play music for them while they do classwork. most children love music, so it will be a treat for them to listen to music in the classroom. as soon as they start talking, switch the radio off. that way they’ll learn the consequences of chattering while they’re supposed to be working.

*try having as many games as possible. if you have a class exercise, split the class into groups and tell them that whichever team finishes the exercise first wins the game. reward them by rubbing off a square from the blackboard or something.

*give some time for the kids to chatter. it’s not necessarily bad…they are kids after all. if they talk while doing exercises it’s ok. tell them something like "alright, here’s what we’re going to do: first i’m going to tell you how to solve this math problem, and you’re going to listen very carefully so that then you can talk with the person next to you and work it out together. "

* BE ASSERTIVE. friendly, but assertive. rules are rules, YOU control the classroom. collaborate with them as much as possible and let them in on what’s happening. but you have to be in control.

there are many more strategies i had used, and they really work!…so email me if you want any more help :)

EDIT – i almost forgot – LESS LECTURING AND SHOWING, MORE INTERACTION!!! kids are interested not when you show them colourful pictures and are given examples of real life scenarios, but when THEY create the colourful pictures, and when THEY come up with the real life scenarios. it also shows whether they’ve understood.

What is a Property? For most people the term â??Propertyâ? generally brings to mind real estate or a belonging. In the world of entertainment or licensing and merchandising, a Property refers to a character or a group of characters. In other words, an Intellectual Property. Well known examples are Mickey Mouse as a single Property or the Teenage Ninja Turtles as a group Property.

Properties can be utilized or arise in a book, a comic book, as an image on a cup or can be the focus of a television program or can be utilized in a television commercial.

Billions of dollars have been generated since Mickey Mouse developed in the wonderful mind of Walt Disney and of course the Disney Corporation is the epitome of intellectual Property rights that all others aspire to.

What does a Property consist of? This is where matters become confusing. If you can imagine in your mind, a pizza pie that has been cut up into slices. Or, better still, take a sheet of paper and draw a pizza or a circle. Then, divide the circle into parts â?? letâ??s say sixteenths. Each one of those sixteen pieces represents a different part of the whole and each one of those pieces can be sold off or licensed, as is more the common practice.

The following are some of the more common categories that are licensed off as part of a Property; publishing, music, board games, electronic games, clothing, television, action figures, plush dolls, remote control toys, play sets, cards, greeting cards, educational products and so on.

Obviously, the more popular the Property, the more licensing fees are generated and the wider the range of products. A wonderful example of a Property that spun off from a first book is Harry Potter. I’m sure that when J.K. Rowling was slogging over her first book in a London cafe, she had no idea that Harry would become a world-wide phenomena spawning a huge array of children’s products.

If you have an idea for children that you think kids around the world will crave after, get started. The North American licensing and merchandising market totaled sales of over $60 Billion in 2006 and North American kids spent over $200 Billion in the same year. How to get started you ask? If you have an idea for a character and have limited artistic abilities, hire an illustrator or an art school student to take from your mind and transpose it onto paper. If you enjoy telling stories that kids like, even if your writing abilities are marginal, write them down.  The point is – get started. Don’t imagine you are going to be an overnight success. It takes hard work, long hours and a lot of money to become and overnight success, however, if you can develop your idea into something kids enjoy or better still want, you are halfway there.

There are hundreds of toys in the children’s toys store with different shapes and attractive colours, but we can’t choose a particular one which is most suitable for our children in a short span of time. Children’s age and sex is one of the main factors when choosing toys for them. When you buy toys which are too advanced for your child’s age, it may cause more harm than benefit. Commonly baby boys love some adventurous toys like electronic toys, toy motorcycle, remote controlled toys etc whereas baby girls love to play with little baby dolls.

Safety is another factor you must consider whenever you need to buy toys. For safety of children always buy from a reputed supplier; avoid temporary shops and market stalls. Before you buy, check the toy yourself. Keep elder children’s toys away from little children. Check the toys regularly for tear and wear.

Today the market is flooded with lot of educational toy stores. Educational Toys are in different forms like puzzles, posters, alphabet toys, books and models etc. An educational toy should act as the key channel in creating the initial spark of interest in the chosen subject. Depending on the age of the child some toys are more suited than others.

The selection of toys may vary from child to child, particularly when they belong to different regions and cultures. Children of the modern world like to play with video games, computer games, electronic toys, battery operated toys, remotely controlled toys etc. Baby toys are not only good for entertainment but they are also helpful in learning and education.

NikNak Toys is the toy store online that you need to visit to find exclusive toys and gifts for your children. Parents should make sure while buying toys that they are safe and secure for their babies.

The toy industry is a very prosperous ones as children will always want toys to play with and their parents will, more often than not; have to abide by the child’s desire. It is only a norm that children will want toys.

Toys are often developed and enhanced to suit the ever changing needs of their main customer which are of course children. Technology has also helped enhanced toys and today, toys are safer as they are smarter.

In choosing for toys, it is crucial that parents don’t just buy any toy that their children would like to have. A parent should choose toys that would promote the well-being of the child (and this is deemed as responsible parenthood), and there are many toys of this kind that are out in the market. Parents should be keen in buying children’s educational toys so that their sons and daughters wouldn’t grow up to be attached to material things as source of happiness. The choice of toys should be those that would aid in the various aspects involving a child’s growth and development.

You can follow these simple guidelines of buying toys that will aid your children in his or her learning experience:

You should be encouraging your children to play with toys that develop their motor skills. Toys that are able to make them relate to other siblings doll house, tea set and ones that gets the child to build or craft will be the toys that fall into this category. Even toys that can be worn such as fun costumes and party theme hats will stimulate their fantasy or imagination and role play are also good for your children.

Â? Let your children choose from the variety of choices

When you provide your children with more choices of toys, they will be happy to choose. However, be sure that the kinds of choices you offer are all Educational Toys. Don’t worry that your child would be bored easily of educational toys because they will be highly engaged to them and entertained as well. There are many types of educational toys such as identify pictures, also those that teach science concepts and arithmetic. After you have identified which are the ones that your child are into, focus on buying those.

Toys that reflect the values presented above are the two below. They are great for nurturing the learning potential of a child :

Â? Toy musical instruments

Miniature guitars, toy xylophones and pianos, flutes and drums are all toy musical instruments that will provide amazing result for the growth and development of a child. There have been studies conducted that links exposure in early ages to music and music producing to academic excellence in later years especially in math and science.

Â? Chalkboards

Children loves to draw and scribble. This is why a chalkboard is an ideal toy for them to do just that. Not only will it improve their writing skills and imagination, chalkboard is a good way to introduce to them the alphabet as most would have alphabets and pictures on the top part of the board.

You can have all the good educational toys in the world for your child but it is really your presence and your willingness to spend time with them will make it an enjoyable learning experience for you child.
