We all remember the recent toothpaste incident with the formaldahyde.
If we banned imports from China until they make significant improvements to the safety of their products, how would this affect us economically?

ain’t ever gonna happen ! We are in bed with China no matter what people say or think ! Our leaders have seen fit to tangle us up around the Chinese so deep in business and international affairs that untangling it without serious reprocussions would be impossible !!
This recent run of "stuff" that is faulty and dangerous is but one in a long string of things that have hit us from that point on the globe within the last six years !! And, it is not going to change for the exact reasons that I have pointed out here earlier !!
What a great deal of people DON’T know — is that by way of subcontracting "deals" — China has been the provider for a great number of "controller chips" that have found their way into a great number of American military hardware devices — such as fighter aircraft and missiles !!!!!! Go to bed at night with THAT on your mind and see if you can sleep comfortably !!! There has even been some concern of late at high levels (but has gone completely unreported) that there is a distinct possiblity that some of these (if not all) could possibly be encoded to fail if triggered by a certain broadcast signal !!! In other words — rendering our "mighty military might" totally useless !!! NOW< HOW YOU GONNA SLEEP ????
In the Run Up to get "business" accomplished — our airheaded "leaders" have put us into a place, yet again where the entire security and well-being of the nation has been sacrificed for the well-being and security of the Wal-Marts of the world !!!!!!!

It would take a little adjusting, and you would not do a complete 100% ban, you would for sure want to increase the taxes, export fees etc from stuff coming from China…I mean I like cheap stuff too but damn…it’s out control…that and their products are dangerous!!
A communist country and a Capitalist country doing business together is doomed because they have slave wages and we don’t. We have quality control, they don’t etc.
In the long run I think it would be a good move to stop buying so much crap from them.

Prices would skyrocket and many products we take for granted might simply disappear from availability.
…And thats if they don’t retaliate. If they take it personally, they could put about $1.2 trillion US dollars for sale on the international market, effectively undercutting the value of our entire economy on an international stage.
Oh, the Chinese economy would probably be in shambles, too.

As a large amount of the US (and Europe’s for that matter) manufacturing has been relocated to China and those who worked in these industries have been retired and retrained, and also that no one is now being trained for these positions, I suspect that the US (and Europe’s) economies will collapse.
Why not though, then China will be the world’s superpower.

Banning imports would lead to a variety of issue for the US economy.
1. Many small businesses rely on imports from China to compete in their markets against larger companies.
2. There are many products sold in this country that are not readily available from sources outside of China.
3. China would cut off all imports from the US which would place severe economic hardships on many companies both large and small.
4. The political backlash would cripple US/China relations.

US is importing from China not because of some love for that country. It is because the items are cheaper. They can import the same from Europe or Russia or from anywhere else. It is pure business. So if China is not the exporter then there are so many. Economy always adjusts.

Outside of the war that would surely ensure, not to mention the inevitable economic collapse of America since it imports more materials from china (due to low cost) and exports a great deal of raw materials to china. Americans would be forced to pay a higher price for goods, and eve face limitations and shortages.
China also buys up large portions of American debt in order to extend budgets, so China is Americas creditor, that would stop.
It would just be a downward spiral.
Why don’t we look to the company like fisher price, a company owned by Mattel. Mattel is an American company that as it grew and went public began to move it’s manufacturing sector overseas.
Instead of blaming the entire nation, why don’t we seek to look at the company, a company which has built is reputation upon children’s toys. Are they in some way not accountable for not having insight into the manufacturing procedures of their product?

From most of the answers here people are more worried about paying higher prices for the "cheap" products that the well being of our citizens. I guess a hugh group of citizens dying from cheap products might wake up the masses. By all means lets wait until that happens.
